Although the Infiniti line generally shares a similar automobile platform with ordinary Nissan automobiles, Infiniti's tend to feature more powerful engines, tuned suspensions, steering systems, and more luxurious interior features. Infiniti was introduced to the United States in 1989 as a high-end luxury car, designed to rival Infiniti and Honda's luxury brands, Lexus and Acura, respectively.
Bad marketing combined with a couple of cars that Americans could not get excited about nearly sent Infiniti down with the Titanic in the early 2000's. In 2002, Nissan and Infiniti's management rededicated itself to developing a dynamic and powerful line of sporty luxury cars. They also expressed an interest in moving the Infiniti brand away from its Nissan roots. In the first salvo of that effort, Infiniti produced a completely redesigned Q45 flagship for 2002. Then in 2003, Infiniti released the Nissan Skyline-based G35, which became an instant hit in the United States.
Moving forward on their momentum, Infiniti released the M35/M45 automotive platform. These cars received a lot of rave reviews from the automotive press in 2006, winning an eight-car comparison test in Car and Driver magazine. The M35/M45 luxury cars also proved to be very popular with consumers in 2006.
