Mazda Parts and Accessories Info
Mazda means "wisdom" in the ancient Persian language. Founded in 1920, Mazda began as a company who was manufacturing machine tools under the business name, Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd. Mazda introduced its first vehicle in 1931. The Mazda-Go was a three-wheeled vehicle that was shaped like a pickup truck with a cab and a bed, but was more like a motorcyle in its actual size and functionality. Mazda's first four-wheeled vehicle was introduced in 1960, and they debuted their second model two years later in 1962. In 1979, Mazda had fallen on hard economic times. That was when Ford Motor Company stepped in to invest more money into the Mazda brand and to pen a deal with Mazda where Ford would base a few future models of their own vehicles on automotive platforms that Mazda had developed. Ford executive Mark Fields is credited with orchestrating Mazda's financial turnaround. Over the past two decades, Ford and Mazda have developed a relationship that exercises collaboration in a more fundamental sense, by way of more automotive platform sharing.
Finally in 1984, the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd company officially adopted the Mazda name, although every car they had ever produced already carried the Mazda brand name. In the 1970's, Mazda introduced the Wankel rotary engine to challenge their competitor's piston-based engines. The Wankel rotary engine allowed Mazda to compete with their competitor's from a position of real strength. And Mazda made the most of the Wankel rotary engine powerplant by putting it in almost every product they sold, including the Rotary Pickup, the RX-7, and the large Luce sedan.
During the early 1980's, the Mazda 626 and 323 were big hits in the U.S. and around the world. The Mazda 323 was so hot that in the Japanese market, it overtook the Toyota Corolla as the best selling car in Japan. Towards the end of the 1980's, Mazda made the decision to try to diversify their product line to better position themselves to compete with Toyota and Nissan. However, Mazda's plans went terribly wrong, and for the next dozen years, Mazda's sales suffered severely.
In 2002, Mazda's long-awaited come back finally got underway with the introduction of the Mazda 6 and the Mazda 2 platforms. The future continues to look favorable for Mazda, but they still have a lot of ground to make up. Mazda has also entered into the SUV and minivan markets beginning with the 2006 calendar year. Also in 2006, the MazdaSpeed 3 won a spot on Automobile Magazine's "All Stars 2007" list.
The Mazda brand has many recognizable cars and trucks, some of which posses the unique rotary engines that Mazda has made famous. Going forward, the outlook for Mazda cars and trucks is shaping up nicely for a quick and healthy turn-around.
