About Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Parts

The Mitsubishi Group is a loose conglomerate of independent companies who share the brand name and trademark. The companies meet monthly to discuss a strategy to maintain the overall integrity of the brand. Japan's first series-production automobile was actually produced by a Mitsubishi company in 1917; the Mitsubishi Model A was produced by the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company. Their hand-built car was considerably more expensive than their American and European counterparts, so Mitsubishi only produced 22 of them before discontinuing production. In 1934, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding was merged with the Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. forming Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Until 1937, MHI was focused on manufacturing aircraft, ships, railroad cars and machinery. And then in 1937, MHI started producing a sedan for the military. Immediately following the war, MHI returned to manufacturing automobiles. Then in 1950, the Allied powers forced the breakup of MHI into three smaller companies. Each of those three spin-off MHI companies began producing automobiles in 1953. The three companies re-integrated their car divisions into a single company in 1964.

The Mitsubishi brand of cars was finally introduced to America in 1982. Mitsubishi wanted to increase their stature in the United States, but they were limited by import restrictions as defined by treaty between the U.S. and Japan. So, as an effort to circumvent the restrictions, Mitsubishi joined forces with Chrysler in 1985 to create Diamond-Star Motors. From the Diamond-Star joint venture came Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser. Mitsubishi officially became Mitsubishi Motors in 1988 with a public stock sale. At various times, other automakers held significant stakes in Mitsubishi Motors, including Chrysler and Volvo. The establishment of Mitsubishi Motors ended Mitsubishi's distinction as the only privately-held Japanese automaker doing business in America. In 1991, Chrysler sold its stake in Diamond Star Motors back to Mitsubishi Motors, although the two companies continue to share components and manufacturing on a contractual basis only.

Mitsubishi showed it first quarterly profit in the third quarter of 2005 after eleven successive losses. Powering Mitsubishi's comeback is the fourth generation Mitsubishi Eclipse, Outlander, Lancer, and Lancer Evolution. The Lancer Evo has long been a popular car for street racers everywhere. Stylish designs have been a trademark of Mitsubishi cars for most of its run in America, and cars like the Lancer Evolution cement Mitsubishi's reputation as being a automaker capable of building quality performance cars.
