Saab Parts
Saab is an acronym for "Svenska Aeroplan Aktie(B)olaget" (The Swedish Aeroplane Company). The company was created in 1937 for the express purpose of building military aircraft for the Swedish Air Force. At the conclusion of World War II, Saab's main market for military aircraft declined considerably. After considering a number of options, Saab decided to move into the passenger car market.
Saab's first car (1947) was the Saab 92, which had a streamlined appearance, a two-stroke engine, and the best drag coefficient (0.32) of any production car in the world at the time. Just like Porsche and other automotive companies, Saab names their designs in numerical series, and the Saab 92 was their 92nd design --- the 92 was Saab's first car design, and it was preceded by 91 aircraft designs. Four-stroke engines, by Ford, were introduced with the Saab 95 and 96 in 1966. In 1967, the Saab 99 was released with a Triumph based engine --- in 1977, this model added an optional turbocharger. Then in 1978, Saab penned a deal with Fiat to develop a new automotive platform that became the 1984 Saab 9000. This new design platform shared its structure with the Fiat Croma and Alfa Romeo 164.
Early in the life Saab, they had seen good success --- Saab's 500,000th car rolled off the assembly line in February of 1970. But by the late 1980's, Saab's automotive division was bleeding red ink as they consistently built more cars than they could sell. As a result of these losses, Saab's parent company spun the automotive division into its own company called Saab Automobile AB in an attempt to attract buyers. Fiat, Mazda and Ford courted Saab early in 1990, but the final deal went to General Motors Corporation. GMC purchased 50% of Saab Automobile with an option on the other 50% at the end of ten years. Under the new GM management team, a new Saab 900 was launched in 1993 based on the Opel Vectra, and by 1995, Saab had earned its first profit in seven years. New generation models currently in production include the 9-3, 9-5, and 9-7X SUV.
Under the leadership of General Motors, the future prospects of Saab Automobile AB look very promising.
