Acura CL And CL Type-S Maintenance and Information
The Acura CL is manufactured by Honda's luxury Acura brand from years 1997-1999, and again from 2001-2003. The CL was a replacement for the Acura Legend coupe and was one of Acura's finest vehicles because of its overall balance of luxury and sport. The Acura CL and CL Type-S were built at Honda's main plant in Marysville, Ohio. The CL nameplate was the first Acura model to be built in the United States. The Acura CL Type-S came with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission with a helical limited-slip differential and a more aggressive suspension.
Maintenance Issues - The Acura CL had numerous issues with the 5 speed automatic transmission including a sudden downshift form 5th gear to 2nd. This failure was primarily due to a bad 3rd gear clutch pack. Acura extended the warranty on the automatic tranny due to this failure.
3.2L SOHC VTEC V6 and the 2.2L or 2.3L I4 Maintenance includes replacing the timing belt and the tensioner’s every 60,000 miles. It is recommended that the water pump be replaced at the same time due to its location behind the timing belt.
Performance Add On's - For the performance minded, the CL comes alive with a cold air intake and a suspension kit to provide the optimum handling. And if the clutch needs to be replaced we recommend the Exedy Heavy duty replacement clutch kit.
The Brakes on the Acura CL and Type-S are the most important safety item on the vehicle. When replacing the Brakes, be sure to replace the discs and rotors in pairs along with new PBR semi metallic or Akebono ceramic pads.
