Information on BMW 2002, 2002TI, and 2002TII
If you own or are considering purchasing a BMW 2002, there are many things you should know about keeping the 2002 in top running condition.
The BMW 2002 was manufactured between 1968 and 1976, all be it little differences between the years, there are some characteristics that define the three different chassis. Between 1968 and 1972, the BMW 2002 was lighter than the later models as it had smaller bumpers, had the higher compression 121TI engine and is well defined by the signature round taillights. The later years 1973 to 1975 had the US Dot spec heavy bumpers and the E12 emission control engine that delivered far less performance than the earlier 121 engine. The 1975 engine adopted the E21 head that was later used on the BMW 320i.
The most common issues with the BMW 2002 are the valve guides in the cylinder head start to wear out. An indication of this is as you decelerate from high rpm speeds you will see a blue puff of smoke come out of the tail pipe. The other items that fail are the clutch, and the carburetor does tend to wear out. If you are in need of a carb, the best choice is to go with a Weber Redline DGAS or DGAV conversion for about $300.00. The 2002 owners will tell you that taking the intake off and port matching the Weber 32/36 carb will give you more horsepower and throttle response.
The BMW 2002TII was a "Kugelfischer" mechanical fuel injection engine that in the early years was identified by 4 plastic intake runners. The later years had the
all aluminum intakes. The TII has many upgrades over the base 2002. The TII has boxed control arms, much bigger front brake rotors and pads, larger rear drums, and a larger exhaust system.
The BMW 2002 was one of the most competitive cars in the SCCA Trans Am Series and was made famous by the Cunningham 2002 Race Cars. Today the 2002 is quite popular in regional SCCA ITB series racing and holds many track records across the USA and Canada.
2002 Performance Upgrades – There are many things you can do to get a lot of performance out of the BMW 2002. First the suspension can easily be upgraded to the Bilstein Heavy Duty Shocks and HD Struts, and lowering springs by Eibach. This puts the 2002 on rails and makes it a totally different and fun car to drive. The Base 2002 Brakes are easily upgraded to the 2002-TII calipers and brake discs, for an increase if over 50% in braking. The Ceramic or Metal master pads with the ATE power discs are a nice braking combination.
