BMW 318i, 318is, E30/36 Parts Accessories and Information

BMW 318The BMW 318i was sold in the USA in early 1983 as an E30 and used the 1.8 litre engine that was highly successful in Europe. The 318 came with a 5 speed manual transmission or a 4 speed automatic. The car was equipped with front disc and rear drum brakes. BMW in mid 1992 released the 318 under the E36 chassis. The early BMW 318 did not capture the US consumer as it was a very small car with minimal power. The car was quickly replaced by the BMW 325e.

Tune Up and Maintenance - The 318 cam is driven by a timing chain and needs very little in the way of engine maintenance. The basics for the 318i include the semi annual tune up that should include the distributor cap & rotor, spark plugs, air & fuel filter. Be sure to check the Spark Plug wires for any indication of carbon tracking or cross firing. If the wires are brittle, the best bet is to replace them with an OE set of Bosch or Bremi Ignition Wires. The valves are mechanically adjusted and do require periodic attention. The rockers and shafts do wear out after 120K miles and may need a cylinder head overhaul.

Brakes - When it is time to replace the brakes be sure to replace both rotors at the same time. Do not turn the OE brake rotors as they will lose their hardness and will in most cases be undersize. We recommend replacing the brake pads with a set of PBR Deluxe, as they stop very well with no noise and minimal dust.

Suspension – The 318 in some cases is over 20 years old and the shocks and struts need to be replaced. The best stock replacements would be the BOGE or the Sachs replacement struts. An upgraded shock would be a Bilstien or a Koni.

DriveTrain – The driveshaft on the 318 has what is called a Guibo joint and a center support bearing. The Guibo is a rubber flex disk between the transmission and the front of the driveshaft that wears out causing vibration in the driveshaft.
