Check the BMW 323 Timing Chain every 90,000 miles for wear. When replacing the timing chain, be sure to change the BMW 323 tensioner and guide rails.

Timing Chain Tensioner
Most timing chain tensioners are hydraulic and are used to take up the slack in the timing chain. The hydraulic types of tensioner use oil pressure to apply pressure to the timing chain. When replacing the timing chain assembly it is always a good idea to replace the timing chain tensioner, the rollers and the timing gears. The Timing chain and tensioner does wear out over time and does require replacement. The replacement intervals vary and you should see your owner’s manual for the replacement recommendations.
