Most timing chain tensioners are hydraulic and are used to take up the slack in the timing chain. The hydraulic types of tensioner use oil pressure to apply pressure to the timing chain. When replacing the timing chain assembly it is always a good idea to replace the timing chain tensioner, the rollers and the timing gears.
