Information on BMW 325i, 325is, 325e, and the 325IX

E30 BMW 3-Series - The E30 chassis BMW was produced from 1982 to 1991 in sedan, and through 1993 as a convertible model. The 325e came with an “eta” 2.7 liter series high torque low reving 6cyl engine that put out 121 hp.
BMW 325i
E36 BMW 325i - The later 325i series vehicle came out with a high revving 2.5 litre 6-cylinder engine that produced 168hp. The 325is was an upgrade from the 325i series that included sports seats, sport suspension, BBS wheels, a 5-speed close ratio transmission, a limited slip differential and a much improved electrical and electronics package. The 325IX was an E30 325i with all wheel drive. The 325IX never really got traction in the US market; however the IX was a significant player in Europe.

BMW 325i/e performance upgrades. The first place to start on the BMW 325 is the suspension. The best improvement for the money can be made in the shocks and struts. The OEM shocks for the 325 were made more for comfort than handling, so a slight upgrade to a Bilstein HD will provide amazing handling without compromising the ride quality. The Bilstein shocks are about 40% more expensive, but with a lifetime guarantee, you won’t be disappointed. We also recommend installing the Eibach 325i Pro Kit lowering springs as they are designed to give the BMW 325 that aggressive look with out killing the ride. Short of modifying the engine the next best place to get some power and fuel economy is by adding an AFE or a K&N air filter. This will give an added 2-5% power gain and about the same in fuel economy.

325i/e Maintenance. Make sure that on the belt driven 325’s that you replace the timing belt every 60,000 miles to prevent drive train damage that can cost thousands of dollars to fix. Remember to replace the idler and the tensioners at the same time. When replacing the brakes on a 325, be sure that you use either a factory pad like Pagid or Textar or a performance pad like PBR ceramic/metallic pad. Using anything else will cause poor braking and loud squealing that will drive you out of the car. When replacing the pads, it is always a good idea to replace the rotors with a set of Brembo or Zimmermann Cross Drilled. One of the weak links in the drivetrain is the clutch. The OE clutch is strong; however the disc center tends to wear out causing the car to make a clunking noise when accelerating and decelerating. The other item is the Dual mass flywheel that will fail due to any sort of long term abuse. When replacing the clutch be sure to use an OEM updated clutch with the heavy duty disc springs.
