The Chevrolet Corvette has come a long way in 60 years. Today’s Corvette has become a highly tuned performance sports car that has 505 horsepower (377 kw) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. The all-new LS7 in the ’06 Z06 reintroduces the 427-cubic-inch engine. Unlike the earlier 427 engine, that was a big-block, the new 7.0-liter LS7 is a small-block V-8 and is the largest Cubic Inch displacement small block ever produced by GM. Internally, the LS7’s engine components include titanium connecting rods and intake valves, to help boost horsepower and increase engine rpm capability.
Chevy has been racing cars for years, however when they entered into the ALMS Series in the late 1990’s, the Corvette quickly dominated the track and has won many events including the 24 hours of Lemans and the 24hours of Daytona.
Many of the breakthroughs in performance and handling have transpired through the racing development programs like GM’s Corvette Racing Team piloted by Ron Fellows and Jonny O’Connell.
