Dot-3, 4 and Dot-5 Brake Fluid
Dot 3 and Dot 4 Brake fluids are recommended by most manufacturers and are a glycol based fluid that has similar characteristics to antifreeze. The Dot 5 Brake fluid is a silicone based fluid
that is not compatible with many OE brake systems.
You need to make sure you refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations when adding or flushing brake fluid. Today’s vehicles have very complex brake systems and most on the road today have ABS systems that are very sensitive to the types of fluid used in the braking system. Adding the incorrect type of fluid could cost you
thousands in brake system repairs.
Dot 3 and Dot 4 Brake fluid will after time absorb water into the brake system. The maximum amount the fluid can absorb is about 3%. A very small amount of moisture in the fluid and easily contaminate the fluid causing rust to form in the brake system. Most manufacturers recommend flushing the entire brake system once a year. This should only be done with a brake flushing system to adequately remove all the moisture.
The boiling point on Dot 3 fluid is approx 400 deg, Dot 4 a bit higher at 446 deg and Dot 5 silicone based fluid will start to boil at 500 deg. There is a number of Dot 4 racing fluids that have additives or are a synthetic based fluid that raises the boiling point to well over 500 deg. DriveWire sells brake fluid that is only compatible for the vehicle listed. Once you have seached our catalog the fluid listed is factory certified to be compatible for your vehicle.
