Disc Brake Calipers
The brake caliper is attached to the wheel hub and holds the brake pads that apply pressure on the brake disc. The front and rear brake caliper has a number of pistons that should last for well over 100,000 miles with proper maintenance. Typically the brake caliper should last longer than you own your car, however due to lack of maintenance, you can find yourself replacing the calipers way before you should have had to.
The one thing that will provide lasting care for your brake calipers is to make sure you have the brake fluid completely flushed every year. If you do not flush the brake fluid, you will get water in the brake hydraulic system causing rust. Rust will get on the brake caliper piston and seize up the caliper.
The most damaging thing you can do to your brake calipers is to fail to change your brake pads, and let the brake caliper pistons score against the brake rotor. If you need to replace the brake caliper, we suggest you do not spend the big bucks on a new caliper, but replace the caliper with a remanufactured unit that is as good as the new caliper at a fraction of the cost.
Drivewire carries thousands of rebuilt brake calipers at great prices. All of our calipers carry the highest warranty and reman standards. Check our online catalog of new and reman brake calipers and save hundreds of dollars on your next brake service.
