Rear Brake Wheel Cylinders
Leaking wheel cylinders are the number one cause of brake system failures on vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes. The o-rings on the wheel cylinder pistons wear out over time and let the brake fluid seep thru to the outside of the cylinder. The wheel cylinder boot usually traps a small amount of fluid before it contaminates the entire rear brake assembly.
When replacing the rear wheel cylinders, always replace them in a set or a pair. This will keep you from having to replace the rear brake a short time later. After replacing the new wheel cylinders you will need to bleed the brakes. This should be done using a brake bleeder, or a person who is qualified to manually bleed the brakes.
