Car and Truck Radiators
The radiator is located just in front of the engine and right behind the front grille of the car or truck. The radiator will have a radiator shroud that directs the air thru the radiator and or provides a method for the radiator fan to pull air thru the radiator. The radiator will also
typically have a radiator cap, and two radiator hoses coming from either end of the radiator. The cooling system may have an expansion tank and an expansion tank cap that allows the coolant to be remotely stored and filled.
Radiators today come in many different variations in size and thickness. Radiators can be a single, double, or triple row radiator. This identifies how many coil rows there are in the radiator. Most of todays cars have custom fit metal or aluminum radiators that are designed specifically for a car or truck, so make sure you dont purchase a universal aftermarket radiator, if your car requires a custom size unit. The job of the radiator is to take the heat out of the engine by transferring heat from the coolant in the radiator into the outside air by the means of the air passing thru the radiator.

It is not uncommon for a engine to start to overheat very easily by just having some obstruction like leaves or paper in front of the radiator. Another overlooked item in an overheating condition is the radiator fan and the radiator fan clutch. The most common reason for having to replace a radiator is a puncture. On aluminum radiators it is very easy to puncture the radiator from a rock or a dense foreign object coming thru the front grille.
On some European and Japanese cars and trucks the radiators are made of aluminum and plastic. It is common for the plastic ends to crack or leak as they become old and brittle form heat. Phosphate free coolant will help an aluminum radiator last longer and wont corrode the aluminum. If the plastic end caps of the radiator have a huge split in them, please check that the head gasket is in good condition. If you are continually replacing end caps or radiators, this is usually due to a failed head gasket.
