Air Injection Pump
The air pump in an automotive engine supplies air to the exhaust system that assists in lowering the hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) gasses. The air pumps in vehicles have progressed form a belt driven air pump to what is currently used on todays s vehicles that is an air injection system using an electronic air pump that is controlled by the vehicle's onboard computer.
Air injection pumps require very little maintenance with the exception of changing the air pump belt on older cars and trucks. Symptoms of a failed air pump would be failing an emissions test, backfiring out the exhaust when the vehicle is cold, or a failed or plugged catalytic converter. On vehicles using computer controlled air pumps, the Check Engine light should warn you of a failed Air Injection Pump.
