EGR Valve
The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum or electronically controlled valve that allows the exhaust to recirculate back thru the intake system, cooling the combustion gasses and burning off any excess unburnt fuel.
The EGR Valve also prevents the formation and build up of Nitrogen Gas or better known as NOX emissions. Because of the heat and carbon passed by the exhaust gasses, the EGR Valve can stick, or become non functional causing the NOX gases to build up.
The EGR Valve is one of the main reasons a car or truck will fail the emissions test. If your vehicle fails the emissions due to high NOX in the exhaust, the likely culprit is the EGR Valve. The other symptoms of a failed EGR Valve are a rough idle, poor fuel mileage and hesitation during acceleration.
