Voltage Regulator Information
Voltage Regulator
There is 2 types of alternator voltage regulators, the internal and external regulator. The external type of regulator is typically located on the fender or the firewall and is easily replaced with out replacing the alternator. The internal type of alternator regulator is located within the alternator and in some cases is replaceable.
To replace either type of regulator you must remove the power form the battery. The preferred way is to just remove the ground or negative battery cable prior to servicing the alternator or regulator. If the regulator is internal and is not removable, then the entire alternator assembly will need to be replaced.
