New Genuine and Performance Camshafts - A single overhead camshaft design is one camshaft placed within the cylinder head. In an inline 4,5, and 6 cyl engine would means there is one camshaft in the head, while in a V 6, 8 engine there would be two camshafts: one per cylinder bank. The SOHC design has less reciprocating mass than a comparable pushrod engine design and the OHC will allow for higher engine RPM speeds, which in turn will increase power output and torque.

On an OHC Engine the camshaft operates the valves directly through a rocker arm or a lifter assembly as opposed to overhead valve pushrod engines, which have tappets, long push rods and rocker arms.
