The head gasket is located between the cylinder head and the engine block and provides a sealing mechanism for the cylinder head to bolt to the engine block. A leading indication that your head gasket has failed is that your car or truck will want to overheat at highway speed. You may also notice that you keep blowing up radiator hoses or split a radiator core. This is due to the head gasket leaking combustion gasses into the cooling system and pressurizing the system beyond its capacity.

The head gasket is used to seal the cylinder head to the engine block and is held down by cylinder head bolts. If you replace the head gasket make sure you replace the head bolts and refer to a repair manual as the correct tightening sequence and torque specifications.
