Piston Rings Information

    Engine Piston Rings Sets
    The piston rings is a ring that fits into a groove on the piston. Its purpose is to form a seal between the piston and cylinder wall. Automotive pistons typically have three rings, the top two for compression sealing and the lower piston ring for oil control. If you have been using a very poor grade fuel in your car, or the timing is out, you can easily damage the pistons and piston rings due to detonation.

    If your car is detonating, you will hear what sounds like ball bearings in the engine when you accelerate. This condition causes undue pressure and temperature on the piston rings and can cause the rings to break. When rebuilding an engine you will want to purchase oversize piston and ring sets, these typically come in .25 oversize, .50 oversize, 1.00 oversize and even up to 2.00 oversize.
