The timing belt tensioner should be replaced along with the timing belt every 60,000 miles or at the manufacturers recommended replacement mileage. The timing belt tensioner keeps pressure on the timing belt so the timing belt does not jump teeth and cause damage to the valve train. The timing belt pulley and the bearing should also be replaced at the same time.
