Fuel Pressure Regulators
The fuel pressure regulator regulates the amount of fuel pressure in the fuel rail that delivers the fuel to the fuel injectors. Changing the fuel pressure by as little as 1 lb, can affect the air fuel ratio by as much as 15%. It is imperative to have the fuel pressure at exactly the correct pressure so that the car or truck will run at its optimum performance and fuel mileage.
It is common for a foreign object to get lodged in the fuel pressure regulator, causing the regulator to malfunction and the fuel pressure to go way up. If your vehicle is running very rich, and or is causing the Oxygen sensor or the catalytic converter to fail, it is in most cases due to a faulty or plugged fuel pressure regulator.
The easiest way to check the pressure regulator is by attaching a EFI high pressure fuel gauge to the inlet line of the fuel rail. This will tell you the pressure in the high pressure side of the fuel system. The normal pressure range is usually 28-36 lbs PSI.
