Distributor Cap
The distributor cap is responsible for transferring the voltage form the coil to the spark plugs. The cap is made from a high resin plastic that withstands heat and very high voltage. The cap has metallic electrodes that extend form the inside of the cap to a plug type of connector on the outside where the spark plug wire attaches.
The distributor cap does wear out and if it cracks, carbon tracks, or has excessive wear can cause a myriad of vehicle poor running conditions. The first and most common issue that a cracked distributor cap will have is a misfire in the engine. If your car or truck is misfiring, the first thing you will want to do is replace the cap and rotor. The next item to check would be the spark plug wires.
