Distributor Rotor
The distributor rotor is located inside the ignition distributor and is attached to the distributor shaft. The rotor turns at one half the engine speed and is responsible for distributing spark to the proper engine cylinder thru the cap and spark plug wires. The rotor carries electrical voltage exceeding 10,000 volts and will after time break down and wear out.
The most common issue with the rotor is that the electrode builds up resistance and causes the spark to jump inside the cap to the incorrect cylinder. The Distributor rotor can also crack internally or develop a pinhole that causes the spark to travel to the distributor shaft and cause the engine to die or fail to start. For peace of mind, replace the distributor cap and rotor once a year, and only use OE quality parts, as inferior parts may cause damage to other electrical components on the ignition system.
