Power Steering Pump Catalog

Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is located toward the front of the engine and it typically run off of the engine drive belt. The power steering pump is used to provide power steering fluid under pressure to the power steering gear or the power assisted rack and pinion. Before you automatically assume the power steering pump is bad because its making noise, make sure that the fluid is topped off in the PS reservoir. Believe it or not, low PS fluid level is the leading cause of premature failure of a power steering pump.

Todays cars require a special power steering fluid that is unique for the specific brand of car or truck. Make sure you check the owners manual before adding power steering fluid, as adding the incorrect fluid could cost you thousands in repairs. The other leading cause of poor performance by the PS pump is a loose drive belt. Always check the PS belt if you are having problems with the power steering in your car.

A common sign of a failing pump includes - a loud whining noise coming from the pump, chattering in the steering wheel as you turn a corner, and complete loss of the power assisted steering. If the power steering pump does need to be replaced, make sure you completely flush the old PS fluid from the system as it may be contaminated with metal shavings. It is also common if the pump fails, that you will have to change the steering rack as well. So do not be surprised if your mechanic gives you the real bad news that you need a new power steering pump and a new rack. Drivewire is here to help if you find yourself in the position of having to replace the entire power steering system.
